Question:
What is a beta-diketone?

I know that a ketone is a carbon that is double bonded to an oxygen, and then has 2 R substituents (R not a hydrogen). A diketone is a molecule containing 2 ketone groups. But what does the beta mean? And is there an alpha as well?

Your right about the ketone and the diketone.

Think of alpha, beta, gamma, and delta as 1,2,3, and 4 respectively.

alpha position means 1 carbon away

beta position means 2 carbons away

etc...

so a beta diketone could be C-C*-C*-C

with C* representing C=O

a delta diketone would be C-C*-C-C-C*-C

and so on...

it's just basic terminology - you've got the hard stuff down it seems.

A beta-diketone is a molecule which has two ketone groups separated by a single intermediate carbon atom. 2,4-pentanedione (otherwise known as acetylacetone) is an example of a beta-diketone. The Wikipedia link illustrates several coordination compounds using acetylacetonate as the ligand.

What is this the 50s? Methods have moved on from the main way of working out what something is from its colour, boiling point and even the kind of chemistry it does! Yes these can all be useful and sometimes these tests are done, but something as complex as what you are talking about which is already an organic liquid, do an NMR!
