BADLY IN NEED OF HELP URGENTLY: how does one know how to draw VSEPR bonds or bonds in general?

ok so how do you draw bonds...how do you know how many covalent bonds an element will have? and how do you draw it using lewis dot structures..i am so confused and annoyed i just dont understand chem..
first of all i dont understand what exactly VSEPR is telling us...what does it mean in english
i find chemistry to deviate from standard english so if you can PLEASE be simple pretend you were explaining to a kid..thanks.

Ok first off VSEPR means (get ready) Valence shell electron pair repulsion. If you start talking about orbital spins and how two up spins or two down spins repulse each other that is what it is.

Now the lewis dot structure is really easy, you just need to know all the elements. First off a single bond would look like this C:C, simple as that. If there is a double bond C::C, there you go. You make expamples looking like this all around the central atom. You should never excede 4 atoms attached to a central atom, though their are very few exceptions.

Next thing you need to look and and figure out is the charge of the atom, that will help you determine how many they can bond to and to what. Rembe that postive always bonds to negitive and if you have a +1 on one atom then it can attach to a -1. All the atoms on the far left of the periodic table are +1, next row is +2, second to last row on right is -1, and third to last on right is -2, Nitrogen(N) is -3 and Carbon is +or-4. Now all you have to do is figure out what comounds you have and make sure that your total charge is 0. Here are some examples Na:Cl, Cl:Ca:Cl, N:::N, H:O:H.

VSEPR structures are basically telling you what shape the molecule is going to take on. When you look at them the bonds that are shown by straight lines would be flat on a piece of paper. The dotted lines would be sticking out behind the paper. The wedge shaped bonds are sticking out towards you. For example, in tetrahedral geometry you can think of it like a ball sitting on a tripod with another ball sticking straight up out of it. Using something like gumballs and toothpicks to show what is happening helps some people.

You can figure out how many bonds an element will form by looking at the periodic table. If you look at Oxygen it has eight total electrons which means it has 6 valence electrons. Since eight electrons forms a full outer shell it wants to gain two electrons. That means it will form two covalent bonds to gain two electrons. You can look at the group the element is in to see how many electrons they have in their valence shell. Group 4A has four electrons in their outer shells so they need four bonds. 5A has five valence electrons so they need three bonds and so on.

Lewis dot structures just use dots to show all of the valence electrons. With oxygen you have six so you would draw one dot above below and on each side of the O, that takes care fo four then you have two more left they will goon the next two available spaces keeping only two to each side. When you are done you have two empty spaces left. This is where your bonds will form. If you add chlorine which needs one electron you pair up the lone electron from the chlorine to one of the lone electrons on oxygen to form a bond.

This page has links you can follow to see examples of the lewis dot and VSEPR structures.

Whether the government/law enforcement would comment or not is really immaterial; they probably would not based on it being an ongoing investigation, but the lack of reporting is again not surprising as it would make the current administration look bad (unless Bush did it of course which probably would be the statement). So many things are ignored but when so much of the media worked so hard to get the current administration elected they hate to say anything to make that decision look bad. Where is the story on the DofJ telling the Philadelphia prosecutor to drop the investigation and charges against the Black Panther "guards" at polling places. It would be front page news and internet news flashes if KKK or skin heads showed up during an election at the polls with baseball bats/clubs and marched around in front "to ensure no one interferes with people voting" and after charges were filed a Republican DofJ told them to drop all action. The media is not only in bed with this administration they made it for them and are serving meals in bed to them. The good news on the economy is all in line with CBO projections made in early January with no action by the government but read the papers it is all President Obama's actions and the Stimulus Package-neither of which were part of the forecast which Congress had before the vote and change in Administration.

try that website that "applejack" gave. It's an excellent explanation and like he says, it has pictures! (You should give him the 10 points).
