The most common ore of tin is cassiterite, which is stannic oxide, or tin (IV) oxide
with the formula SnO2. The word equation for the reduction of tin with carbon is:
tin oxide + carbon (+ heat) → tin + carbon dioxide
The carbon dioxide is given off as a gas and the melted tin can be drawn off and
cooled. The chemical equation is: SnO2 + C → Sn + CO2(g)
