A Mass Spectrometer is an anlytical instrument which gives the information of the molecular weight of the sample i.e.,you can get the m/z values.If u take a sample and keep it in the mass spectrometer the sample first ionizes and splits into fragments ,and these fragments are entered into an mass analyzer in which the fragments m/z values are analysed and detected to get the mass spectrogram.

In mass spectrogram the stable peak or the base peak in which having the highest abundance peak.

There's a good book by a bloke called Pavia, entitled spectroscopy, or something imaginitive like that. It's pretty good, tells you all the common situations you get in GCMS tests...



Those things can be pretty interesting, the only time I've ever used them I was specifically looking for one compound though...

Never did find it.
